I'm wearing a tee tonight that says "Surely not everybody is kung fu fighting". It made me laugh as soon as I put it in my online cart. I wore it for the first time tonight, and was underwhelmed by the response, but then I almost always am when it comes to what tees I think are awesome. It did, however, lead me to a writing realization...
Does it matter if EVERYONE is kung fu fighting?
As the people of MST3K taught me, "It doesn't matter if everyone gets the joke, it only matters if the right people get the joke". Recently I've focused on the everyone, and not enough on the Kung Fu Fighting. That statement may, or may not, make more sense as you read.
I have a friend whose opinion on movies means a great deal to me. We don't agree all of the time, but that does not lessen his opinion to me. He's more of a cinephile than I am. I read, and enjoy, comic books, he doesn't, but he still appreciates the movie genre. That is where our opinions about comic book movies usually diverge. That's Kool and the Gang with me. I decided back in 2008 with the first Iron Man movie, that I was going to forgo my Fanboy Nerdom and let that medium (cinema) take me where it will. Iron Man was my favorite, and Tony Stark even moreover. I think I've said her before that, to be sure I'd enjoy the first Iron Man, I watched nothing but SyFy movies the week before the release to be sure I set the bar so low Iron Man couldn't possible disappoint.
It didn't disappoint, and not just because of my pre-causionary movie viewing.
It was an actual good movie with a plot and character development, two things that most superhero movies to that point were missing. Heck, those are two things that most of the superhero movies still miss. This fact doesn't make sense to me because the movie producers have a great resource of characters and plots right there in the comics for them. Why can't they get it right, or at lease swing and miss by inches? Usually, when a superhero movie misses it's not by inches.
Batman v Superman...I'm looking at you
Ok, so what is the point of this entry in my Sudden Onset Evolution Blog that has been vacant for over a year?
Well, I say the movie Logan and it inspired me to create. The movie is fraking amazing! Maybe not according to my cinephile friend (who liked it, but didn't love it) but still. Logan reminded me of what I lovw about comics and the genre. It's not just the adamantium claws, but it's who owns them, why they are there, and what that all means to the character. Wolverine could be a simple and really cool Agro hero who just fights, but he's not. He has a detailed back story that makes him who he is. The fact that he doesn't know his own back story through much of his life but is still the man he is, makes him even more of a fascining character. That is what made Logan so great in my mind. The movie focused on that side of the story, rather than the hack and slash that most people attribute to the move. Oh, there is plenty of Hack and Slash in Logan and done exceptionally well, but that's not what it is all about. Go see it! Of course if you are reading this, you prolly already have plans to or have already.
The question remains...why after a year (and more) of not posting, did I decide to post this and what the frak is going on with Mitosis, Lady Splendid, Logix, Holy Mammoth, NinChick, PD and Gamer?
They've been fighting a battle inside my head for what is good and what is just words.
I've written several thousands of words in a disjointed, "this is good", sort of way. I can't seem to tie them all together just yet. I have a story concept. I have an outline. I don't have the right introduction quite yet. For those of you who don't write I can tell you that the 999th word is WAY easier than word #1.
In my head, the adventures of Lady Splendid and Powerful Dude have already been written. I can envision them when I close my eyes. My brain wants to write what my fingers can't seem to type. I have the story, I just haven't put it down on paper yet.
The only thing scarier than a cute girl say "hey" is the blank page.
THAT
ENDS!
I'm going to make a promise to both of you who read this...
I will have the next book published by July of 2017. My goal is to have a booth at Chicago's Wizard World in August. I have the story, now I just need to tell it to all of you.
So it is written, so it must be done.
So Say We All...
